No wind is a good wind: what AI needs before it can help you
AI is here to stay, but pointed at an organisation built around documents it returns marginal gains at best, because the model cannot work with information it never gets to see.

Seneca wrote that to his friend Lucilius two thousand years ago. It means that if you don't know which port you're sailing to, no wind is a good wind.
I think about that line every time I read about AI.
"AI will replace us all." "AI will do everything for us." "AI will destroy us."
None of that is true. What is true is that the genie is out of the lamp and it is not going back in. AI is here to stay, and the sooner we learn how to work with it, the better.
Why? Because with the right context and the right limits, it can do remarkable things in very little time.
But getting there means stepping back and asking what AI needs from you before it can make you more efficient. That is time and thought well spent.
It also takes some courage. AI is a change of paradigm, and it will not deliver one if the company keeps working the way it always has.
Point it at an organization built around documents, where the PDF is the source of truth and the process lives on paper, and you'll get marginal gains at best. The model can't work with information it never gets to see.
Sit down with your team. Measure where you are. Decide where you want to go. And agree on how you will know you got there.
That last one is the hard part.
